About the event

Bede Wind is the resident wind band of The Glasshouse International Centre for Music (formerly The Sage Gateshead), holding weekly rehearsals there each Friday night.

The community wind band has performed at indoor and outdoor venues both home and abroad over the past three-and-a-half decades, including tours in the US and Europe.

The concert will feature a varied programme of both regional favourites and international standards and include a special guest soloist.

Ernest Young

Bede Wind has been led throughout its 35 years by conductor Ernest Young, who was awarded a British Empire Medal for services to music in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list in 2019.

Ernest established the band in 1989 when he was Head of Music at Springfield School to allow pupils of the school to continue playing after leaving and it now attracts musicians from across the North-East.

Later becoming Music Co-ordinator for South Tyneside, Ernest has worked as an arranger and conductor for both the BBC and ITV and his compositions have featured on ‘Young Musician of the Year’ as well as all major examination syllabuses.

Much of the band’s music is either composed or arranged by Ernest, who has also written more than 150 compositions and arrangements for church choirs.
