Cultural and social impact vision

Our vision is to create a world-class, fully utilised, multi functional, well-funded, sustainable asset for North Tyneside and its communities.

Set in the heart of North Shields’ Cultural Quarter, The Exchange 1856 will play a pivotal role in North Tyneside and the Combined Authority’s strategy to reinvigorate the town through cultural and creative opportunities.

Working together with our partners and local communities, we will be creating a cultural eco system for people and businesses in North Shields to create a place that changes lives for the better.

We plan to make instant impact by significantly investing in the facilities, creating employment and expanding our offer. Watch this space.

Affordable. Accessible. Inclusive. Enriching.
Our foundations and goals are built around enhancing and improving the lives of people and businesses across North Tyneside.

All in a spectacular building with 160 years of heritage...

Our stunning Grade II-listed, 160-year-old Victorian gem of a building is one of North Tyneside’s greatest assets.

We provide a cultural, socialbusiness hub and office space in North Shields for the local community full of energy and spirit.

Our rich history includes links to one of the greatest heroes of World War II. North Shields-born, Thomas Brown helped break the Enigma Code by bravely rescuing code books from a sinking German U-boat. This shortened the War substantially, saving many lives.

Thomas’s life is honoured in The Exchange 1856’s special Thomas Brown Meeting Room and Brown's Bar and Restaurant, which is dedicated to his memory.

A place to work together
Our partners helping to deliver a vision for a better future for North Tyneside.
